Ichigo ichie- Japanese Way to Happiness

Updated: Feb 19

J-wellness, or Japanese-inspired wellness is getting attention and has become a global phenomenon during the last few years. Ikigai, purpose but at a measured pace; Kintsugi, art of repairing broken pottery; Wabi-sabi, embracing imperfection and transience; Ichigo Ichie, cultural concept of treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment, and Shinrin-Yoku, forest bathing.

What Is Ichigo Ichie?

Ichigo Ichie, which translated as, “ Once, a meeting”, or “For this time only”, is a Japanese practise that aims to lead happier more fulfilled lives by letting go of the past and easing their tension about the future. In other words, it also means to tell us is that each meeting, everything we experience, is a unique treasure that will never be repeated in the same way again. Similar to an old saying that the Greek philosopher once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

To fully understand this concept, you shall imagine that life is a series of coincidences and each moment carries with it the promise of transformation. Changes, no matter how insignificant, will end up triggering a chain reaction that results in a much bigger cataclysmic effect. Think butterfly effect, which implies that a butterfly flapping its wings in Hong Kong will unleash a storm in New York. In such context, we should understand that each moment is precious as we hold no clue about where life ends up taking us.

Ichigo Ichie leads us how to observe and cherish every moment to achieve the highest levels of peace and harmony in our lives. Take a look to the following guide about this Japanese Way to Happiness.

1. Dwell In The Present

Journey into the past and future are often daunting and unpredictable. You can’t change what happened. You can’t know what will happen. But you have this moment, where all the possibilities in the word are alive. Remember , where you place your attention is where you place your energy.

2. Do One Thing At A Time

As the old Japanese proverb says” If a hunter aims at two prey he will kill none”. The essence of this saying is that you have to put your attention to one thing only, when you do something do it like its the most important thing in the world.

3. Live Like If This Were Going To Happen Only Once In Your Life

Ichigo Ichie encourage us to greet and say goodbye to our loved ones like as if it was the last time, to make us aware of the unique and once-in-a-lifetime nature of each meeting.

4. Do Something You’ve Never Done Before

To achieve an unforgettable moment is by giving yourself over and allowing something new to blossom inside you. When you are sending different energy to the universe and you will then receiving different energy as well.

5. Practise Seated Meditation

Make seated meditation an active part of your daily routine. The simple fact of stepping away from the daily whirlwind of hurry and obligations will open the doors to well-being.

6. Apply Mindfulness To Your Five Senses

Simply train yourself to listen, watch, touch, taste, and smell the surroundings to lead a richer more fulfilling existence. This will boarder your horizon and allow you to be more alert to others and increase your level of empathy and influence.

7. Don’t Neglect Coincidences

The universe speaks to us through coincidences. Have you ever think about someone and then bumped into them or receive their phone call unexpectedly? Keeping a journal of daily magic will increase our ability to follow the invisible threads of reality.

8. Practice Compassion

Don’t judge a person by one small behaviour. Have compassion to what the others are going through in their lives that has prompted them to speak or behave the way they did. Diminishing the frequency you judge or criticise yourself or others for no justifiable reason, practice compassion and be kinder to yourself and people around you.

9. If You Don’t Like It, Change It.

Ichigo ichie teaches us to take control of our lives. If you don't like what there is, actively work on changing them.

10. Hunt For Special Moments

Always be on the lookout for special moments. Keep your heart open and stay kind, abundance flows your way when you are open and willing.
